59!

I think I’m sick again. Dangit! I mean, I’m not even sure I got completely better the last time. Of course, I didn’t make a follow-up appointment (silly me with all my free time and all). For weeks I’ve just felt like there’s this stuff that I can’t clear from my throat (I know, eww gross, tmi. But you’re nursing students you’ll get over it.) Anyway, so yeah the only way to really clear it is to cough. Lately though, I’ve had a sore throat and I’m thinking it’s from all the “coughing”… then I developed a dry cough and now my chest hurts from coughing. *sigh* So it’s off to see the doctor tomorrow.

I know I haven’t really posted much lately. I need to jot down my ideas of things I could write about so I don’t totally space out the next time I sit in front of my computer, and then end up writing about my phlegm like I just did. (haha sorry) I did listen to my own lungs (though I’m not sure how effective that is) and they sounded fine.

This is it for now. I am going to make a to-do list for tomorrow and end my night with some reading. I hope you are all well.

Last weekend was brutal. Right after my hospital hours on Friday I came home, showered, barely ate dinner, and crashed on the couch. My body was just so tired of me pushing it while it was telling me to rest, so rest I did.

I’d been “sick” for a couple weeks by then. I saw a doc on Thursday (not MY doc ’cause she was off that day) who told me it was “just a cold” and gave me a list of OTC meds I could take to relieve symptoms. (Gee thanks.) I went in to the hospital feeling ok the next day, though I was on Tylenol and Sudafed to kill my sinus pain. By the end of the day I wanted to take a tube, stick into my face, and attach it to suction. (Note: Don’t actually go and do this!)

So back to the weekend… I slept early Friday (was in and out during the Olympics’ opening ceremony–it was gorgeous btw!). I slept most of Saturday and Sunday. By Monday, I was starting to get better. By “better” I mean I didn’t feel a need to sleep all day. (Thank goodness for the 3-day weekend!)

Tuesday, I went to see the doctor. MY doctor this time. She actually listened to me list my worsening symptoms over the past 2 1/2 weeks. Imagine that. Listening to the patient. (I love my doc!) She prescribed me some antibiotics for the sinusitis, told me my lungs don’t sound like it’s gotten to bronchitis yet. YET. She also gave me a script for prednisone to help relieve the inflammation and allow me to breathe better (I have asthma normally controlled with an inhaled steroid, but lately have been needing my rescue inhaler too). I’m to continue the Tylenol and Sudafed, PRN, and take guiafenesin (an expectorant) to thin out my mucus. Yum.

Today, I still have sinus pain, but it’s bearable. I contacted my preceptor last night and asked if I should come in today, and she told me to rest. I wonder though if it’s due to me being sick (protect patients) or me being on prednisone (protect me). Maybe both? Anyway, I’ll have to make up those hours…

As it is I’m playing catch-up with my homework because, as you know, when you’re a nursing student there’s no time to be sick. *sigh*

Today’s tip: Don’t get sick.

I think I’m getting the hang of this thing. WordPress is definitely different from another site I’m used to. For one, there is no edit button in the comment section… it drives me nuts to see myself having made a typo or simple error, and even more nuts that I can’t fix it. Another thing is the reply button… I keep forgetting that the responses nest and sometimes I’m replying to the wrong person. I may just go back to using the @ symbol from now on.

I do, however, LOVE LOVE LOVE that it autosaves drafts. There have been many times I have lost a post because it did not save. (Again, this is that other place.)

Anyhoo… classes have started and I really shouldn’t be online right now. I should be reading till my eyes bleed. I’ll try to post when I can, because seriously I have a couple of drafts saved that I just need to edit. (Yay for an edit button there!) I’ll come back when I have some time.

Free time? What free time?

The Other “3 Rs” January 16, 2010

I love the portability of plastic water bottles. I usually buy a case of 24. Then each morning before I head to class I grab a bottle or two and go.

Convenient. Easy. Disposable.

Uh-oh. The d-word! I know I’m not the greenest person in the world, but I’m trying to do my best by:

  • purchasing the ones made with less plastic
  • refilling the bottles a few times before disposing of them
  • recycling the bottles

Still, I feel guilty for supporting the creation of so much waste. I have to admit, my environmental health class last semester made an impact. So here is “just one thing” that I’m changing this January (and possibly forever):

Just One Thing

This beauty here was only a few bucks at Target. It’s an aluminum water bottle by Gaiam. It’s cute (I love the writing on the side), portable, cold water seems to stay cold longer in this bottle, AND the best part: there is less waste! Yesss… I can refill it as many times as I want!

The only downside is that I have to wash it instead of just tossing it… but that’s ok. I think I’ll survive.

Do you do any of the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle)?
